Tripod Headstand

Sirsasana II

AdvancedInversion FoundationsInversions

At a glance

A headstand variation with the hands planted flat on the floor in front, rather than interlaced behind the head, creating a wider, tripod-like base between the two hands and the crown of the head. It offers a different balance point than the classic Headstand, and for some bodies, a more accessible one.

Plant the hands wide before the head ever comes down.

Essence

The wider base created by the separated hands changes the balance point compared to the interlaced-fingers version, and that difference is worth teaching explicitly rather than assuming this is simply an easier version of the same thing. Some students find the wider tripod base considerably more intuitive. Others find the classic version's cradled head position more secure. Neither is inherently superior.

Intention

To balance in a headstand using a tripod base of two separated hands and the crown of the head, offering a different stability point than the classic version.

What this pose develops

Physical

  • Shoulder and core strength supporting an inverted balance
  • A distinct balance point from classic Headstand
  • Wrist strength and stability under a weight-bearing load

Mental

  • Comfort with a genuinely different technique, not just a variation
  • Trust in an inverted position with a less cradled head support

Teaching concepts

  • Presenting this as a really different technique, not simply an easier or harder version of Headstand
  • Applying the same contraindication screening as classic Headstand, without exception

How to practise

  1. 1Kneel, and plant the hands on the floor, spaced wider than shoulder-width, fingers spread.
  2. 2Place the crown of the head on the floor, forming a triangle with the two hands.
  3. 3Walk the feet in, lifting the hips, elbows stacking under the wrists for stability.
  4. 4With the core engaged, lift the legs with control, working toward a vertical line.
  5. 5Press actively through the hands, the head contributing only light, stabilizing contact.
  6. 6Hold, breathing steadily, then come down with the same control used to enter.

Alignment exploration

Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:

  • Hands planted wide, elbows stacked under the wrists.
  • Weight distributed between the hands and the crown, the head still bearing only light contact.
  • Core engaged to support the vertical line.

Breath

Steady breath throughout, the same principle as classic Headstand: held breath often signals gripping rather than the distributed strength the pose depends on.

Teacher’s eye

The same weight-distribution principle from classic Headstand applies here: the hands should be doing the majority of the work, the head contributing light, stabilizing contact rather than bearing significant weight.

Student practice

Reflect after practising:

  • The same cautions as classic Headstand apply here: this isn't appropriate with a neck injury or condition, high blood pressure, glaucoma or other eye conditions, or during pregnancy.
  • This is a truly different technique from the classic version, not just an easier or harder variation. It's worth trying both to see which balance point feels more available to your body.

Common movement strategies

Rather than mistakes, you may notice:

  • Build the same forearm and shoulder strength foundation as classic Headstand, through Dolphin Pose and related preparation, before attempting either version.

Modifications

  • Practicing against a wall for additional support and confidence.
  • Classic Headstand as an alternative if this wider base doesn't feel as stable for your particular body.
