PA-0107
At a glance
The primary series version of Shoulderstand, sharing the same shoulder-weight-bearing principle as the general entry but held for a considerably longer, sustained duration as part of the sequence's finishing poses. The extended hold changes the pose's character, asking for genuine endurance on top of the basic technique.
“Support the mid-back before the legs reach fully vertical.”
Essence
Everything true of the general Shoulderstand entry applies here, with the added dimension of sustaining that correct alignment over a much longer hold than most other poses in this library ask for. Technique that holds up for five breaths can start to slip over several minutes, and that's worth watching for specifically in this extended version.
Intention
To hold Shoulderstand for an extended, sustained duration as part of the primary series' finishing sequence, maintaining correct shoulder-weight-bearing technique throughout.
What this pose develops
Physical
- •Shoulder and upper back endurance, not just initial strength
- •Sustained core engagement
- •The same circulatory effects as general Shoulderstand, extended over a longer hold
Mental
- •Genuine endurance and stillness over an extended duration
- •Settling into a finishing sequence after a demanding practice
Teaching concepts
- •Screening for the same neck-related contraindications as general Shoulderstand, without exception
- •Watching for technique degrading over the extended hold, not just at the start
How to practise
- 1From Plow Pose or a supported transition, come into Shoulderstand, hands supporting the mid-back.
- 2Extend the legs straight up, weight in the shoulders and upper arms.
- 3Let the chin soften slightly toward the chest, without straining.
- 4Hold for an extended duration, breathing steadily, gaze to the nose.
- 5Maintain the same alignment throughout the hold, not just at the beginning.
- 6Transition to Plow Pose or the next pose in the sequence when the hold is complete.
Alignment exploration
Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:
- •Weight stays in the shoulders and upper arms throughout the entire extended hold, not just initially.
- •Hands actively support the mid-back.
- •Chin softens toward the chest without straining or compressing.
Breath
Ujjayi breath, sustained and steady across the extended hold. This is one of the poses in this library where breath consistency over time matters as much as the breath itself.
Teacher’s eye
Watch for technique degrading as the hold continues, not just at the start. A student whose alignment was correct for the first minute but has begun compensating by the third deserves the same attention as one who never had it right to begin with.
Student practice
Reflect after practising:
- •The same cautions as general Shoulderstand apply here: this isn't appropriate with a neck injury or condition, or high blood pressure.
- •If your alignment starts slipping partway through the hold, that's worth addressing rather than pushing through to complete the full duration.
Common movement strategies
Rather than mistakes, you may notice:
- •Build comfort with shorter Shoulderstand holds first, extending the duration gradually as both strength and technique consistency improve.
Modifications
- •Legs Up the Wall as a complete alternative offering related benefits without the extended weight-bearing demand.
Completion check
- ✓Transition to Plow Pose with control, continuing into the next pose in the finishing sequence.
