Upward Lotus

Urdhva Padmasana

AdvancedInversion FoundationsInversions

At a glance

A continuation of the finishing sequence, crossing the legs into full lotus while still supported in a shoulderstand-like position, the palms coming to press the knees for stability. It combines the same lotus prerequisite found throughout this library with the neck-caution principles of Shoulderstand.

Settle the lotus fully before you press the palms to the knees.

Essence

Full lotus needs to be really comfortable on the floor before attempting it inverted, and this pose asks for that comfort under an additional layer of complexity: maintaining the inversion's shoulder-weight-bearing technique while also managing the lotus position. Rushing this combination before either piece is solid risks both the knees and the neck.

Intention

To cross into full lotus while inverted, maintaining shoulder-weight-bearing support, the palms pressing the knees for stability.

What this pose develops

Physical

  • The same deep hip external rotation as any full lotus pose, now under an inverted, weight-bearing context
  • Continued shoulder and core strength from the broader finishing sequence
  • Balance and stability combining two significant demands

Mental

  • Patience with a pose depending on two independently significant prerequisites
  • Sustained composure within a longer sequence

Teaching concepts

  • Screening full lotus comfort on the floor before ever suggesting this inverted version
  • Maintaining the same neck-caution screening as the rest of the finishing sequence

How to practise

  1. 1From Shoulderstand or Ear-Pressure Pose, begin crossing the legs into full lotus.
  2. 2Once the lotus is settled, bring the palms to press against the knees for stability.
  3. 3Find a steady, tall position, weight still supported through the shoulders.
  4. 4Hold, breathing as steadily as the position allows.
  5. 5Release the lotus with care before continuing to the next pose in the sequence.

Alignment exploration

Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:

  • Full lotus settled and pain-free before this pose is attempted at all.
  • Weight remains in the shoulders throughout, the same principle as the rest of this sequence.
  • Palms press the knees actively for stability, not passively resting.

Breath

Ujjayi breath, steady, though the combined demand of the inversion and the lotus position can make that truly challenging.

Teacher’s eye

Screen full lotus comfort on the floor first, the same standard as any lotus-based pose, before this inverted version is ever suggested. The combination of an unready lotus and an inverted, weight-bearing position compounds risk in a way that's worth taking seriously.

Student practice

Reflect after practising:

  • Full lotus needs to be comfortable on the floor before you bring it into this inverted context. If it's not there yet, staying in Shoulderstand without the lotus is the better choice today.
  • The same neck cautions from the rest of this sequence apply here as well.

Common movement strategies

Rather than mistakes, you may notice:

  • Build full lotus comfort extensively on the floor, and separately build comfort and endurance in Shoulderstand, before combining them in this pose.

Modifications

  • Shoulderstand without crossing into lotus, as a complete substitute for anyone whose lotus isn't ready for this inverted context.

Completion check

  • Release the lotus with care, continuing into the next pose in the sequence.
