Reclining Thunderbolt

Supta Vajrasana (Ashtanga)

AdvancedBackbend FoundationsBackbends

At a glance

A deeply demanding pose combining full lotus, a bind of the toes behind the back, and a controlled recline until the crown touches the floor. This is traditionally taught with hands-on assistance from an experienced teacher, and that detail matters: it's not designed to be approached solo, especially while still developing.

Let the lotus and the bind both settle before any reclining begins.

Essence

Every element here, the lotus, the bind, the controlled recline, has its own significant prerequisite, and the traditional reliance on assisted teaching reflects how much genuinely can go wrong when any one of those pieces isn't ready. This isn't a pose to self-teach from a written description alone.

Intention

To combine a full lotus bind with a controlled reclining backbend, traditionally taught with direct teacher assistance.

What this pose develops

Physical

  • The combined demands of full lotus, a challenging bind, and controlled spinal extension
  • Significant core and quadriceps control

Mental

  • Trust in a teacher's guidance for a pose that isn't safely self-taught
  • Long-term perspective on an advanced, traditionally assisted shape

Teaching concepts

  • Being explicit that this pose is traditionally taught hands-on, not from verbal cues alone
  • Redirecting the overwhelming majority of students toward foundational work instead

How to practise

  1. 1This pose is appropriate only under the direct, hands-on guidance of an experienced teacher, given its traditional teaching method.
  2. 2From a comfortable full lotus, the toes are bound behind the back.
  3. 3With direct support, the body reclines with control, working toward the crown touching the floor.
  4. 4The teacher's assistance manages the controlled descent and the safe return.

Alignment exploration

Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:

  • Not appropriate to detail as a self-directed sequence, given the traditional reliance on hands-on teacher assistance.

Breath

Steady breath, managed alongside the teacher's physical guidance through the pose.

Teacher’s eye

This pose is not intended to be cued verbally alone. If direct, experienced hands-on assistance isn't available, this pose is not appropriate to attempt, regardless of a student's apparent readiness in the component pieces.

Student practice

Reflect after practising:

  • This is one of the few poses in this entire library that genuinely shouldn't be attempted without a teacher's direct, hands-on guidance.
  • If that guidance isn't available, this pose simply isn't part of your practice right now, and that's the appropriate, safe choice.

Common movement strategies

Rather than mistakes, you may notice:

  • Not applicable outside of direct instruction from an experienced, qualified teacher.

Modifications

  • Reclining Upward Foot Thunderbolt, or Bound Lotus, as substitutes that build related capacity without the same traditional requirement for hands-on assistance.

Completion check

  • Managed entirely through the teacher's direct guidance.
