Side Plank

Vasisthasana

IntermediateCore FoundationsCore & Stability

At a glance

A side-facing balance on one hand and the outer edge of one foot, hips lifted into a straight line. It's a genuine test of shoulder stability and lateral core strength, and the shoulder-wrist stacking is worth establishing before anything about the hips or legs.

Stack the shoulder over the wrist before the hips lift.

Essence

A student with the shoulder positioned in front of or behind the wrist, rather than directly stacked, is placing uneven load through the joint, which can feel fine briefly but doesn't hold up over a sustained hold or repeated practice. Getting that stack right first makes everything else about the pose more sustainable.

Intention

To hold a side-facing balance on one hand, hips lifted into a straight line, building shoulder stability and lateral core strength together.

What this pose develops

Physical

  • Shoulder stability under a weight-bearing, laterally loaded position
  • Lateral core (oblique) strength
  • Balance on a narrow base

Mental

  • Sustained focus under a demanding, exposed balance
  • Body awareness of joint stacking, a subtle but important detail

Teaching concepts

  • Cueing the shoulder-wrist stack before any instruction about the hips
  • Reading whether the hips are sagging, which reduces the pose's actual core demand

How to practise

  1. 1From Plank, shift weight onto one hand and the outer edge of the same-side foot.
  2. 2Stack the shoulder directly over the wrist.
  3. 3Stack the feet, or stagger them slightly for more stability if needed.
  4. 4Lift the hips, creating a straight line from head to heels.
  5. 5Reach the top arm up toward the ceiling, or keep it resting on the top hip for more stability.
  6. 6Hold, breathing steadily, then release and repeat on the second side.

Alignment exploration

Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:

  • Supporting shoulder stacked directly over the wrist.
  • Hips lifted, in line with the shoulders and ankles, not sagging or piking.
  • Top hip stacked over the bottom hip, not rolling forward or back.
  • Neck long, gaze forward, up, or down, whichever keeps it comfortable.

Breath

A steady breath supports the sustained balance and shoulder stability this pose asks for. Holding the breath tends to correlate with gripping through the shoulder rather than genuine stability.

Teacher’s eye

Look for sagging in the hips first. A dropped hip position significantly reduces the core engagement this pose is meant to build, even if the arm and shoulder look stable.

Student practice

Reflect after practising:

  • The shoulder stacking directly over the wrist matters more than how high your hips lift. Get that alignment first.
  • Staggering the feet, front foot slightly ahead of the back, is a completely valid way to build more stability while you develop balance.

Common movement strategies

Rather than mistakes, you may notice:

  • Build shoulder stability separately through Plank Pose holds before adding the lateral, weight-shifted demand of Side Plank.

Modifications

  • Bottom knee lowered to the floor for more stability while building strength.
  • Feet staggered instead of stacked.
  • Forearm on the floor instead of a straight arm, reducing the wrist and shoulder demand.

Completion check

  • Lower the hips and return to Plank with control, pausing before repeating on the second side.
