Rooster Pose

Kukkutasana

AdvancedCore FoundationsCore & Stability

At a glance

An arm balance lifting a full lotus position entirely off the floor, pressing through the hands threaded between the legs. It builds directly on Embryo in the Womb (Garbha Pindasana), and it carries the same non-negotiable lotus prerequisite as that pose, now combined with a genuine strength demand on top.

Settle full lotus completely before you ever try to press up from it.

Essence

This pose only makes sense once full lotus is comfortable and the arm threading from Embryo in the Womb is already familiar. Attempting to press up into the air before that foundation is solid asks the arms to compensate for what should be a stable, settled base, which is a poor trade.

Intention

To lift a full lotus position off the floor using the arms threaded between the legs, pressing through the hands.

What this pose develops

Physical

  • Significant arm and shoulder strength
  • Core control balancing the lifted lotus position
  • The same deep hip external rotation as full lotus

Mental

  • Patience with a pose that depends entirely on an already-stable foundation
  • Discernment about genuine readiness across both the lotus and the strength demand

Teaching concepts

  • Screening full lotus comfort thoroughly before ever suggesting this pose
  • Treating Embryo in the Womb, without the lift, as a complete practice for the significant majority of students

How to practise

  1. 1From a comfortable, settled full lotus with the arms already threaded through, similar to Embryo in the Womb.
  2. 2Walk the hands forward slightly, planting them firmly on the floor.
  3. 3Press down through the hands, lifting the entire lotus position off the floor.
  4. 4Hold briefly, balancing on the hands alone.
  5. 5Release back down to the floor with control.

Alignment exploration

Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:

  • Full lotus stable and pain-free before any lift is attempted.
  • Hands planted firmly, weight distributed evenly across both.
  • Core engaged to control the lift, not relying on arm strength in isolation.

Breath

Steady breath, though the brief, intense nature of the lift often takes priority over any specific pattern.

Teacher’s eye

Screen full lotus comfort first, the same standard as any lotus-based pose. Beyond that, this is a pose where the appropriate response for most students is building strength and lotus comfort separately, rather than encouraging the combined lift.

Student practice

Reflect after practising:

  • Full lotus needs to be truly comfortable and stable before this pose is worth attempting at all.
  • Embryo in the Womb, without lifting off the floor, is a complete and valuable practice on its own.

Common movement strategies

Rather than mistakes, you may notice:

  • Build significant arm and shoulder strength through other arm balances, alongside extensive full lotus comfort, before attempting the combined lift this pose asks for.

Modifications

  • Embryo in the Womb, without lifting off the floor, as the appropriate practice for most students.

Completion check

  • Release back down to the floor with control, unwinding the lotus with care afterward.
