Fish (Ashtanga)

Matsyasana

AdvancedBackbend FoundationsBackbends

At a glance

The primary series version of Fish Pose, practiced in full lotus and typically used as a counterpose following shoulderstand and headstand work. It combines the same crown-touching-lightly principle as the general Fish Pose entry with the added hip demand of full lotus.

Settle the lotus before the crown touches down.

Essence

Everything true of the general Fish Pose's neck caution applies here, layered on top of full lotus's own hip requirement. Treating this as simply "Fish Pose but in lotus" undersells how much is being asked of the body simultaneously, hips and neck both needing to be genuinely ready.

Intention

To recline into a backbend from full lotus, crown of the head touching the floor lightly, typically used as a counterpose after inverted poses.

What this pose develops

Physical

  • The same chest and throat opening as general Fish Pose
  • Hip external rotation from the full lotus base
  • Thoracic spine extension

Mental

  • A settling, counterbalancing quality after inversions
  • Comfort combining two independently demanding elements

Teaching concepts

  • Screening full lotus comfort the same as any lotus-based pose
  • Cueing the same light-touch crown principle as the general version, without exception

How to practise

  1. 1Come into a full lotus position, settled and comfortable.
  2. 2Walk the hands back behind the hips for support.
  3. 3Begin reclining back, arching the upper back and letting the crown of the head touch the floor lightly.
  4. 4Reach for the feet with the hands if that's available, or keep the hands supporting on the floor.
  5. 5Hold for five breaths, gaze to the nose, weight staying light on the crown throughout.
  6. 6Release by lifting the head first, then unwinding the lotus with care.

Alignment exploration

Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:

  • Full lotus stable and pain-free before reclining.
  • Crown touches the floor lightly, most support coming from the upper back and arms.
  • Chest lifted and open throughout.

Breath

Ujjayi breath, with the open chest position often naturally inviting a fuller breath.

Teacher’s eye

Screen full lotus comfort first, the same standard as any lotus-based pose. Beyond that, apply the same crown-weight caution as the general Fish Pose: light touch, not passive weight-bearing.

Student practice

Reflect after practising:

  • Both halves of this pose, the lotus and the crown position, have their own separate readiness. If either isn't there today, working them separately is the better choice.
  • The crown is a light touch here, the same as in the general version of this pose.

Common movement strategies

Rather than mistakes, you may notice:

  • Build comfort in full lotus and the general Fish Pose separately before combining them into this variation.

Modifications

  • Full lotus alone, without reclining.
  • General Fish Pose (legs extended) as a complete substitute if lotus isn't available.

Completion check

  • Lift the head first, then unwind the lotus legs with care before moving on.
