Wide-Angle Seated Fold

Upavistha Konasana

Beginner to IntermediateSeated FoundationsSeated

At a glance

A wide-legged seated fold, legs spread apart and the torso folding forward between them. It's a demanding combination of hamstring and inner-thigh length, and it's one of the poses in this family where sitting on a genuine lift changes the experience dramatically.

Lift out of the hips before you walk the hands forward.

Essence

Without height under the sitting bones, most bodies immediately round the low back here just to sit upright, let alone fold forward. Treating the lift as optional undersells how much it actually changes what this pose can offer, especially for anyone without exceptionally open hips already.

Intention

To fold forward between wide-spread legs with a long spine, using height under the hips to make that length really accessible.

What this pose develops

Physical

  • Hamstring and inner-thigh length simultaneously
  • Hip flexibility in a wide-open position
  • Spinal length under a demanding combined stretch

Mental

  • Patience with a pose that most bodies access slowly over time
  • Comfort with an exposed, wide-open shape

Teaching concepts

  • Offering a block or folded blanket as the default starting point, not an optional add-on
  • Cueing the walk-forward of the hands as hip-driven, not shoulder-driven

How to practise

  1. 1Sit on a folded blanket or block, legs spread wide, knees and toes pointing up toward the ceiling.
  2. 2Press the hands into the floor behind or beside the hips, lengthening the spine up.
  3. 3Walk the hands forward slowly between the legs, hinging from the hips.
  4. 4Keep the spine as long as possible, only rounding once the hip-driven length has been fully used.
  5. 5Rest the hands, forearms, or forehead on the floor or a block, wherever the fold naturally stops.
  6. 6Breathe steadily, allowing gradual release rather than forcing depth.

Alignment exploration

Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:

  • Kneecaps face the ceiling, not rolling forward or back.
  • Spine stays long as the hands walk forward, especially in the earlier part of the fold.
  • Feet flexed, legs active even in the stretch.
  • Weight even across both sitting bones.

Breath

The same patient, exhale-supported release found in the other seated folds. This pose in particular benefits from truly long holds, since both the hamstrings and inner thighs need time to release together.

Teacher’s eye

A rounded low back appearing the moment the hands start walking forward is the tell to catch. That usually means the sitting bones aren't elevated enough for the current hip mobility, and more height, not more forward reach, is the useful adjustment.

Student practice

Reflect after practising:

  • Sitting on a genuine lift, not just a thin mat fold, makes a real difference here. Don't skip it to save a moment of setup.
  • This pose often takes a long time to open. Consistent, patient practice matters more than any single session's depth.

Common movement strategies

Rather than mistakes, you may notice:

  • Widen or narrow the leg angle to find where the stretch is most productive today, rather than assuming maximum width is always the goal.

Modifications

  • A firm bolster or several folded blankets under the sitting bones.
  • Blocks under the forearms or forehead to shorten the distance for the upper body to rest on.
  • A strap around the feet, held with both hands, to assist the forward walk while keeping the spine long.

Completion check

  • Walk the hands back slowly, bringing the legs together gently to release, and pause before standing.
