Three-Limbs Face-One-Leg Fold
Triang Mukhaikapada Paschimottanasana
At a glance
A forward fold with one leg folded back alongside the hip, similar to a kneeling position, and the other extended straight ahead. The asymmetry this creates in the hips is the main thing to manage, since it easily pulls the fold uneven if left unaddressed.
“Level the hips before you fold.”
Essence
The folded-back leg tends to lift that side of the hips higher than the extended-leg side, and folding forward from an unlevel base pulls the spine into an uneven twist that has little to do with the intended stretch. Leveling the hips first, even if that means the fold looks smaller, produces a far more honest version of this pose.
Intention
To fold forward over one extended leg while the other leg folds back alongside the hip, keeping the hips level throughout.
What this pose develops
Physical
- •Quadriceps and hip flexor length in the folded-back leg
- •Hamstring length in the extended leg
- •Postural awareness of hip leveling under asymmetrical positions
Mental
- •Attention to a subtle but important alignment detail that's easy to overlook
- •Patience with an asymmetrical shape that may feel more available on one side
Teaching concepts
- •Cueing hip leveling explicitly before the fold begins
- •Offering support under the higher hip as a default, not an afterthought
How to practise
- 1From a seated position, fold one leg back alongside that hip, similar to Thunderbolt but to one side.
- 2Extend the other leg straight ahead.
- 3Check that both sitting bones are evenly grounded, adding support under the folded-leg hip if it's lifted.
- 4On an inhale, lengthen the spine.
- 5On the exhale, fold forward over the extended leg, reaching for the foot or shin.
- 6Hold for five breaths, gaze to the nose, then rise and repeat on the second side.
Alignment exploration
Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:
- •Both sitting bones evenly grounded before the fold begins, using support under the higher hip if needed.
- •Spine stays as long as possible through the fold.
- •Extended leg's foot flexed, leg active.
- •Folded-back knee stays close to the extended leg, not splaying wide.
Breath
Ujjayi breath, with the inhale used to reestablish length in the spine before each exhale deepens the fold slightly further.
Teacher’s eye
The level of the hips is worth confirming before the fold, not after. A student who's already folded forward from an uneven base is harder to correct than one who's cued to level out first.
Student practice
Reflect after practising:
- •A folded blanket or block under the raised hip is doing real work here, not just adding comfort.
- •This pose is often noticeably different side to side, since the folded-back leg asks a lot of the quadriceps and hip flexor.
Common movement strategies
Rather than mistakes, you may notice:
- •Practice the folded-back leg position alone, without the fold, checking hip level with a hand on each side, before adding the forward reach.
Modifications
- •A block or folded blanket under the raised hip.
- •The folded-back leg's ankle supported with a rolled blanket if the top of the foot is uncomfortable against the floor.
Props
Completion check
