Neck Half-Circles

-

BeginnerMobility FoundationsMobility

At a glance

A gentle neck mobility movement, the chin dropping toward the chest and tracing a semicircle from side to side through the front of the range. The explicit exclusion of the back of the circle is a genuine safety principle, not an arbitrary restriction.

Move side to side through the front, never dropping the head back.

Essence

Full neck circles that travel through extension, tipping the head back, place the cervical spine in a compressed, vulnerable position that offers little mobility benefit relative to its risk. Restricting this movement to the front half, chin to chest and side to side, provides real mobility benefit while avoiding that unnecessary risk entirely.

Intention

To gently mobilize the neck through side-to-side movement in front of the body, deliberately excluding the more vulnerable backward-tipping range.

What this pose develops

Physical

  • Gentle cervical spine mobility, safely bounded
  • Neck and upper trapezius release
  • Awareness of the neck's more vulnerable ranges

Mental

  • Trust in a movement with a clear, sensible safety boundary
  • Gentle release through a commonly tense area

Teaching concepts

  • Cueing the "never back" boundary explicitly and consistently, every time this movement is taught
  • Explaining briefly why that boundary exists, so it reads as informed guidance rather than an arbitrary rule

How to practise

  1. 1Sit or stand tall, shoulders relaxed.
  2. 2Let the chin drop gently toward the chest.
  3. 3From that position, slowly trace a semicircle, moving the ear toward one shoulder, then back through the chin-to-chest position, then toward the other shoulder.
  4. 4Keep the movement within this front half of the range, never tipping the head back.
  5. 5Move slowly, breathing steadily, for several rounds.

Alignment exploration

Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:

  • The head never tips back into extension at any point in this movement.
  • The movement stays within the front semicircle: chin to chest, ear toward each shoulder.
  • Shoulders stay relaxed and level throughout.

Breath

An easy, continuous breath, with the movement itself, more than any specific breath pattern, providing the calming quality here.

Teacher’s eye

Keep a close eye on the head drifting backward past the chin-to-chest position, even slightly. That boundary is a genuine safety principle, worth reinforcing every time this movement is taught rather than assuming it's understood after one explanation.

Student practice

Reflect after practising:

  • The exclusion of the backward half of the circle isn't arbitrary. That position places real, avoidable strain on the neck for very little benefit.
  • Move slowly enough to stay fully within the front half of the range, rather than letting momentum carry the head back.

Common movement strategies

Rather than mistakes, you may notice:

  • Cue this movement explicitly every time it's taught, rather than assuming familiarity, given how commonly full neck circles are taught elsewhere without the same safety boundary.

Modifications

  • A smaller range of motion, staying closer to center, for anyone with neck sensitivity or injury history.

Completion check

  • Return to a neutral, upright head position, noticing any release through the neck and shoulders.
