At a glance
The most demanding pose in the Marichyasana series, combining a half lotus position with the bound twist from Marichyasana C. It's typically the last of the four to become available, and for good reason, given how many separately demanding elements it asks to come together at once.
“Settle the lotus knee before adding a single degree of twist.”
Essence
This pose only makes sense as the endpoint of real, separate work on the lotus position, the bound twist, and the combination of the two in Marichyasana B. Arriving at this shape by forcing whichever piece is missing, almost always the lotus knee, trades long-term joint health for a shape that isn't actually ready yet.
Intention
To combine a half lotus hip position with a bound spinal twist, representing the most demanding integration in the Marichyasana series.
What this pose develops
Physical
- •Deep hip external rotation from the lotus leg
- •Spinal rotation combined with a bind
- •Shoulder mobility under a complex combined shape
Mental
- •Real patience, since this pose typically takes a long time to become truly available
- •Discernment about prerequisites over pursuit of the final shape
Teaching concepts
- •Screening the lotus knee before anything else, without exception
- •Treating this pose as a long-term goal for most students, not a near-term target
How to practise
- 1From a seated position, bring one foot into half lotus, letting the knee settle without force.
- 2Bend the other knee, foot flat on the floor close to the hip.
- 3On an inhale, lengthen the spine.
- 4On the exhale, rotate toward the bent knee, wrapping the same-side arm around the shin and binding with the opposite hand, catching the lotus foot within the same bind if available.
- 5Continue lengthening and rotating with each breath.
- 6Hold for five breaths, gaze to the side, then transition to the second side.
Alignment exploration
Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:
- •The lotus knee must rest without pain before any other part of this pose is attempted.
- •Spine lengthens before it rotates, on every fresh breath.
- •Bent knee stays relatively vertical.
- •Bind shoulder relaxed, not straining to force a full connection.
Breath
Ujjayi breath, though given the significant demand of this combination, a labored breath is common and worth treating as a cue to simplify rather than push further.
Teacher’s eye
Screen the lotus knee first, every single time, before considering anything else about this pose. This is one of the poses in this library where the right teaching move, for most students on most days, is to work the component pieces separately rather than the full combination.
Student practice
Reflect after practising:
- •This pose typically takes a long time to become available, and that's normal, not a sign of insufficient practice.
- •If the lotus knee doesn't settle, working Marichyasana C without the lotus leg is a complete and valuable practice today.
Common movement strategies
Rather than mistakes, you may notice:
- •Build genuine mastery of Marichyasana B and C independently, along with a comfortable, painless half lotus, before ever combining all of it into this pose.
Modifications
- •Marichyasana C without the lotus leg.
- •Half lotus position alone, without the twist or bind.
- •A strap for the bind rather than a direct grip.
Props
Completion check
- ✓Release the bind first, then unwind the lotus leg with care, before repeating on the second side.
