At a glance
A combination of the half lotus position with the knee-hug and bind pattern from Marichyasana A, layering real hip and shoulder demands on top of each other. This is one of the more anatomically demanding poses in the seated sequence, and it deserves to be approached that way.
“Settle the lotus foot before you build anything on top of it.”
Essence
Each element of this pose, the lotus, the knee hug, the bind, the fold, has its own prerequisite, and this pose only makes sense once all of them are independently available. Attempting to build the shape by forcing whichever piece is least available is a common route to strain, particularly at the lotus knee.
Intention
To combine a half lotus hip position with a bound knee-hug and forward fold, building on Marichyasana A.
What this pose develops
Physical
- •Deep hip external rotation from the lotus leg
- •The same knee-hug and bind pattern as Marichyasana A, now combined with the lotus
- •Hamstring length in the bent-and-extended standing leg
Mental
- •Patience with a pose built from several independently demanding pieces
- •Discernment about whether all the prerequisites are really in place today
Teaching concepts
- •Screening the lotus knee thoroughly before ever suggesting this combination
- •Treating each missing piece as a reason to modify, not push through
How to practise
- 1From a seated position, bring one foot into half lotus, letting the knee settle without force.
- 2Bend the other knee, drawing that foot in and hugging the shin, similar to Marichyasana A.
- 3Reach the same-side arm around the hugged shin, binding with the opposite hand or a strap, and if available, also securing the lotus foot within the same bind.
- 4On an inhale, lengthen the spine.
- 5On the exhale, fold forward over the bent leg.
- 6Hold for five breaths, gaze to the nose, then transition to the second side.
Alignment exploration
Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:
- •The lotus knee must rest without pain before any other part of this pose is attempted.
- •The hugged knee stays close to the torso, the same principle as Marichyasana A.
- •Spine stays as long as possible through the fold.
- •Bind shoulder relaxed, not straining to complete a full connection.
Breath
Ujjayi breath, though given the intensity of this combination, a labored or held breath is common and worth taking seriously as a signal to simplify the shape.
Teacher’s eye
Screen the lotus knee first, before anything else about this pose. If it doesn't settle without strain, this combination isn't appropriate today, regardless of how available the other elements are.
Student practice
Reflect after practising:
- •This pose asks several separate things of your body at once. If any one of them isn't available today, working the others without the full combination is still valuable.
- •The lotus knee is the piece most worth protecting. Everything else can be modified around it.
Common movement strategies
Rather than mistakes, you may notice:
- •Build genuine comfort with the lotus position, the knee-hug and bind, and the forward fold as separate skills before ever combining them into this pose.
Modifications
- •Half lotus position only, without the additional bind and fold.
- •Marichyasana A without the lotus leg, if the lotus position isn't available today.
- •A strap for the bind rather than a direct grip.
Props
Completion check
- ✓Release the bind first, then unwind the lotus leg with care, before repeating on the second side.
