Marichyasana A

Marichyasana A

IntermediateSeated FoundationsSeated

At a glance

A forward fold combining one bent knee hugged close to the torso with a bind wrapping around that shin, before folding forward over the extended leg. It's the first of the four Marichyasana poses in the primary series, and it establishes the bind pattern the later variations build on.

Hug the shin in before you reach the arm around it.

Essence

The bind here should follow naturally from the knee already being hugged in close, not be forced by reaching further than the torso's actual position allows. If the knee has drifted away from the body to make room for the reach, the bind has been prioritized over the fold's actual mechanics.

Intention

To fold forward over one extended leg while the other knee, hugged close to the torso, is bound with the opposite arm.

What this pose develops

Physical

  • Hip flexion and hamstring length in the extended leg
  • Shoulder mobility through the binding arm
  • Core engagement to hug the bent knee close

Mental

  • Sequential problem-solving, since the bind depends on the knee position being established first
  • Sustained ujjayi breath under a demanding combined shape

Teaching concepts

  • Cueing the knee hug as the foundation the bind depends on
  • Offering a strap for the bind without treating it as a lesser version

How to practise

  1. 1From Staff Pose, bend one knee, drawing the foot in close and hugging that shin against the torso.
  2. 2Reach the same-side arm around the shin, reaching for the opposite wrist behind the back, or catching a strap if the hands don't meet.
  3. 3Extend the other leg straight ahead, foot flexed.
  4. 4On an inhale, lengthen the spine.
  5. 5On the exhale, fold forward over the extended leg.
  6. 6Hold for five breaths, gaze to the nose, then transition to the second side.

Alignment exploration

Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:

  • Bent knee hugs close to the torso throughout, not drifting away to accommodate the reach.
  • Extended leg active, foot flexed.
  • Spine stays as long as possible through the fold.
  • Bind shoulder relaxed, not hunching to force the connection.

Breath

Ujjayi breath, sustained through the hold, with the transition in and out linked to specific breaths within the flow.

Teacher’s eye

Notice whether the bent knee has drifted away from the torso to make room for the bind. That trade usually means the fold's actual mechanics have been sacrificed for the sake of connecting the hands, and it's worth cueing the knee back in even if that means releasing the bind.

Student practice

Reflect after practising:

  • A strap between the hands is a complete way to practice this bind. There's no need to force a direct grip.
  • The knee staying hugged in matters more than how far around the bind reaches.

Common movement strategies

Rather than mistakes, you may notice:

  • Practice the knee hug and forward fold without the bind first, to establish that foundation before adding the arm wrap.

Modifications

  • A strap between the hands instead of a direct grip.
  • The bind released entirely, hands resting on the extended leg or the floor instead.

Yoga strap

Completion check

  • Release the bind and the bent knee with control, extending the leg before repeating on the second side.
