At a glance
A full lotus pose with the arms threaded between the calves and thighs, hands reaching to frame the face, sometimes followed by a gentle rocking motion along the spine. It asks for a stable, comfortable full lotus as an absolute prerequisite, since the arm threading adds real complexity on top of that base.
“Let the lotus settle fully before threading the arms through.”
Essence
Full lotus itself is already a significant hip requirement, and this pose asks for that same lotus to remain stable while the arms work through a threading motion that adds torque and pressure around the knees. Approaching this before full lotus is genuinely comfortable, not just achievable with effort, risks the knee for a pose that isn't ready to be attempted yet.
Intention
To thread the arms through a full lotus position, using the resulting shape for introspective stillness, sometimes paired with a gentle rock.
What this pose develops
Physical
- •Deep hip external rotation from the full lotus base
- •Shoulder and arm mobility through the threading motion
- •Core stability if a rocking motion is included
Mental
- •A deeply internal, often meditative quality
- •Patience with a pose that depends entirely on an already-stable foundation
Teaching concepts
- •Screening for a really comfortable full lotus before ever suggesting this pose
- •Treating the arm threading as an advanced addition, not an assumed next step
How to practise
- 1Come into a full lotus position, both feet resting on the opposite thighs, settled and comfortable.
- 2One arm at a time, thread the arm between the calf and thigh of the same-side leg.
- 3Once both arms are threaded, bring the hands toward the face, resting the chin or cheeks in the palms if that's accessible.
- 4Hold in stillness, or add a gentle rocking motion along the length of the spine if that's part of the practice being taught.
- 5Release the arms one at a time with control.
Alignment exploration
Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:
- •Full lotus stable and pain-free before any arm threading begins.
- •Arms threaded without forcing or wedging against resistance in the knee or calf.
- •Spine allowed to round naturally into the shape, rather than held rigidly.
Breath
Ujjayi breath, slow and internal. If a rocking motion is included, the breath often naturally syncs with that movement, though it doesn't need to be forced into a specific pattern.
Teacher’s eye
Screen full lotus thoroughly before this pose is ever suggested. A lotus that's achievable with effort but not truly comfortable is not a stable enough base for the added complexity of threading the arms through.
Student practice
Reflect after practising:
- •Full lotus needs to be a place you can rest in, not just briefly hold, before this pose makes sense to attempt.
- •If your lotus is available but not fully comfortable, working on that alone, without adding the arms, is valuable and complete.
Common movement strategies
Rather than mistakes, you may notice:
- •Build full lotus to genuine comfort over a long period, through dedicated hip work, well before considering this pose at all.
Modifications
- •Full lotus alone, without threading the arms, as the appropriate practice for most students working toward this pose.
Completion check
- ✓Unthread the arms slowly, one at a time, before releasing the lotus with care.
