At a glance

The fourth and final wide-stance fold, returning to the toe-hook grip from Big Toe Pose but from the wider stance, working the crown toward the floor with the elbows spread wide.

Let the elbows travel wide as you fold this final variation.

Essence

This closing variation brings the sequence back to where it started, the same toe grip as the very first standing fold, which makes it a useful marker of how much has opened up across the four variations. Depth here is a nice byproduct of that progression, not something to force independently.

Intention

To close the four-part wide-stance sequence with a toe-hook fold, crown working toward the floor.

What this pose develops

Physical

  • Deep hamstring and inner-thigh release, built on the previous three variations
  • Finger and forearm engagement through the grip
  • Sustained fold under counted breath

How to practise

  1. 1From standing, hook the first two fingers and thumb around each big toe.
  2. 2Fold forward, elbows bending out wide to the sides.
  3. 3Work the crown of the head toward the floor between the feet.
  4. 4Hold for five breaths, gaze to the nose.
  5. 5Release the grip on an inhale, rising to standing to close the sequence.

Alignment exploration

Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:

  • Elbows spread wide rather than tucking in.
  • Weight even across both feet.
  • Crown works toward the floor as a result of the fold's depth, not through forcing the neck down independently.

Breath

Ujjayi breath, steady through the final hold of the four-part sequence.

Teacher’s eye

By this fourth variation, most students have opened up noticeably compared to the first, and that's worth checking for. Use it as a chance to notice progress within a single practice, not as a reason to push for more depth than the previous three variations earned honestly.

Student practice

Reflect after practising:

  • Compare how this fold feels to how Prasarita A felt at the start. Most people find real, noticeable ease by the fourth variation, purely from the warming effect of the three before it.

Common movement strategies

Rather than mistakes, you may notice:

  • If depth still feels limited here, it's more useful to build hamstring length gradually over weeks of consistent practice than to search for a different grip or stance today.

Modifications

  • Hands on the shins instead of the toe hook, matching whatever modification was used in Big Toe Pose earlier in the practice.

Completion check

  • Inhale to release and rise to standing, closing the four-part sequence and moving to the next pose.
