Gate Pose

Parighasana

BeginnerStanding FoundationsStanding

At a glance

A kneeling and standing hybrid, one leg extended straight out to the side while the other knee stays grounded, with a side bend reaching over the extended leg. It offers a similar side-body stretch to Triangle Pose but from a lower, more supported base.

Lengthen the extended leg's side before you reach over it.

Essence

The side bend here works the same way it does in any standing side stretch: length through both sides of the waist matters more than how far down the reaching hand travels. The lower, kneeling base makes this an accessible entry point to that principle for students who find full standing side bends more demanding.

Intention

To create a side-body stretch from a kneeling base, one leg extended to the side.

What this pose develops

Physical

  • Side-body length
  • Inner thigh and hamstring length in the extended leg
  • Hip stability in the kneeling leg

Mental

  • Applying side-bending principles in a more supported, accessible position
  • Comfort with an unusual but stable hybrid shape

How to practise

  1. 1From kneeling, extend one leg straight out to the side, foot flat on the floor.
  2. 2Keep the kneeling leg's hip stacked over the knee.
  3. 3Reach the arm on the extended-leg side down along that leg.
  4. 4Reach the other arm up and over, creating length through the whole top side of the torso.
  5. 5Hold, breathing into the side stretch.
  6. 6Rise back to kneeling with control before repeating on the second side.

Alignment exploration

Instead of searching for the “correct” position, notice:

  • Kneeling hip stays stacked over the knee, not sinking forward or back.
  • Extended leg's foot stays flat and grounded.
  • Side bend creates length through both sides of the waist, not just a lean toward the extended leg.
  • Chest stays open, not rolling forward toward the floor.

Breath

Each inhale supports lengthening through the reaching side before the exhale allows the shape to settle further.

Teacher’s eye

Look for the same collapse pattern as any standing side bend: the underside ribs caving in toward the extended leg rather than staying lengthened. The kneeling base makes this pose more accessible, but the same alignment principle still applies.

Student practice

Reflect after practising:

  • This pose offers a gentler, more supported way to feel what a full side bend, like in Triangle Pose, is really asking for.
  • A folded blanket under the kneeling knee is a reasonable and common addition, not a sign of needing to modify further.

Common movement strategies

Rather than mistakes, you may notice:

  • Practice the reach and side-body lengthening standing upright first, arms overhead in a simple side bend, to feel the same principle without the kneeling base's added balance demand.

Modifications

  • A folded blanket under the kneeling knee for comfort. A block under the lower hand if reaching the extended leg or floor strains the side body prematurely.
